La découverte du 40ème nombre de Mersenne premier a été annoncée en décembre 2003 par le GIMPS (Great Internet Mersenne Primality Search), un groupe associant des volontaires pour réaliser du calcul partagé grâce à Internet. Ce nombre, 2 puissance 20996011 – 1, possède 6 320 430 chiffres.
C’est le plus grand nombre premier connu, et il fournit aussi le 40ème nombre parfait pair.
Le calcul a été réalisé en utilisant le Test de Lucas-Lehmer.
