MLK Day

Martin Luther King Day est chaque année le 3ème lundi de Janvier, le plus proche du 15 janvier qui est sa date de naissance. Cette année ce sera lundi 16 janvier 2012. Comme chaque année, voici une sélection de sites que vous pouvez utiliser en classe pour MLK Day, mais aussi sur le thème de Black History Month, avec « Strange Fruit », la vie de Rosa Parks et L’histoire de Emmett Till.

Attention ! Si vous utilisez un moteur de recherche (type Google) ou pire, si vous demandez à vos élèves de le faire en autonomie, sachez que martin luther king dot org est un site raciste habilement créé par un groupe de “white supremacists” (la signature en bas de page renvoie à un groupe qui prône des idées racistes et nazis.). Au premier abord, il a l’air d’un site normal sur MLK, mais dès que vous lisez les articles vous voyez qu’ils tentent de détruire l’image de MLK. Le problème est que certains élèves peuvent se laisser prendre. Alors pensez à faire votre sélection de sites avant de laisser les élèves travailler en autonomie!

Time For Kids propose ce rap où « Disney Channel star Roshon Fegan raps about famous firsts made by African Americans ». Il y a une vidéo (que vous pouvez regarder sur You Tube et enregistrer) et le script complet du rap.

Biographies

Voici deux biographies simples et visuelles, niveau A1+, créés par des élèves de maternelle. Les images sont un peu simplistes, mais les textes les accompagnant sont courts, faciles à comprendre, et permettent à des débutants de repérer et comprendre les moments clés de la vie de MLK et de son mouvement. Les phrases sont au présent : un exercice simple pourrait consister à les mettre au passé et les assembler pour créer une biographie. Même des élèves très faibles peuvent le faire, et ils sont surpris du résultat! A essayer pour remotiver certains…

Holiday's Strange Fruit: Using Music to Send a Message--Many early African-American songs, such as "The Drinking Gourd," were used to pass secret messages during the period of slavery. As Reconstruction passed into the Jim Crow Era, predominately African-American music such as jazz and blues evolved. This music explored the feelings of frustration, poverty, and depression that many African-American communities experienced. This music also began advocating for social change. Songs that promoted social activism were rare before the mid 1960s. One of the earliest of these songs, "Strange Fruit," was sung by the blues singer, Billie Holiday. Though it was popular, Holiday's recording company, Columbia Records, refused to produce the song due to its controversial nature. A small record company picked it up, and it has now been commonly accepted as Holiday's signature song.

From Democracy Now : the journalist present her life and you can hear her April 1956 report of the event while watching her picture. But her voice is not very easy to understand and the video/audio file is very long. this video is for advanced students : there is almost no redundancy between the pictures and the script : when you see interesting pictures, the sound is just a song, and when there is the interview, there are too few images to illustrate what she says.
